Tips and Advice for a Perfect Pool

The advent of quality automatic swimming pool cleaners is partially responsible for the sharp rise in backyard swimming pool popularity. A swimming pool becomes much more of a liability than a source of enjoyment if it significantly increases your chore list, or if it drives your expenses much higher due to hired pool cleaners. But devices such as skimmers, robotic pool cleaners, pool sweeps, and pool vacuum cleaners fix all that, and make the job of cleaning your pool a whole lot easier.

Skimmers

When thinking of pool cleaning, the first image that pops into my head is a person holding long pole with a net at the end and clearing the surface of leaves. This is what you see the “pool boy” do in movies. This task is called skimming, and it can be very labor intensive. Luckily, most of the work can be done by an automatic system called a pool skimmer. A skimmer is a system that sucks in surface water though an opening at the side of the pool and deposits debris in a basket. Many in-ground pools have skimmers built in, while above ground pools can be fitted with an external device. Although in the latter case it is somewhat cumbersome and interferes with the swimming space.

Pool Vacuum Cleaners

Swimming pool vacuums connect to the pool’s skimmer and rely on its suction and filter to do the cleaning, but operate at the bottom of the pool to collect dirt from the pool’s floor. Automatic vacuum cleaners roam the floor of the pool on their own, sucking up dirt as they go. A good automatic vacuum will cover the pool’s floor using a random pattern to minimize the chance that any patch is missed. For pools that don’t have a skimmer, as above-ground pools usually don’t, self sufficient robotic pool cleaners are available. These carry their own rechargeable battery, pump, filter, and propulsion means on board.

Pool Sweeps

Automatic pool Sweeps sweep, scrub and dislodge debris from the pool’s floor and sides. Some sweeps will also pick up and store debris in an onboard bag, keeping the pool’s filtration system cleaner.

In-Floor Cleaning Systems

If you’re building an in-ground pool and are willing to spend the money, an in-floor cleaning system is the ultimate in automatic pool maintenance. This systems is installed during pool construction and relies on strong underwater jets to create a current that dislodges dirt and moves it toward the pool’s main drain, where it gets pulled into the swimming pool’s filters.
